Inlays and onlays are used when a conventional restoration (‘filling’) is not substantial enough to repair a cavity and when the tooth requires more support. Onlays are used in cases where the tooth’s chewing surface needs to be restored whilst inlays treat less serious cases.
Inlays and onlays are used to protect and support a tooth at the back of the mouth that may have been extensively damaged by trauma or decay.
The added benefit is that, unlike with dental crowns, less of the natural tooth has to be removed before fitting.
An inlay is fitted in between the four corners of your teeth, while an onlay offers more coverage covers the entire biting surface of the teeth thereby protecting weakened cusps and reducing the risk of future tooth fracture.
While inlays and onlays can be made from metal, the most popular material we offer is ceramic or Zirconia, which is colour matched to natural teeth.
What you can expect when getting an inlay or onlay?
Your dentist will examine the area and decide upon whether an inlay or onlay is required. Impressions or digital scans of the tooth in question will be taken and sent away to the dental lab, where your custom inlay or onlay can be made. They are usually made from metal, ceramic or zirconia.
